Built in 1955 by Hudswell Clarke in Leeds, Mirvale was delivered to the Mirvale Chemical Company in Mirfield. It is a on off design which incorporated many standard Hudswell Clarke components.

In 1968 it was privately purchased and moved to the newly formed North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) in January 1969. It would become the first locomotive to traverse the entire preserved line between Pickering and Grosmont. Due to its small size it was unsuitable for regular use on the NYMR so only steamed occasionally before being put into store two years later.

Mirvale’s preservation story didn’t end there as in 1986 it was put up for sale and purchased by the Middleton Railway Trust and a consortium of trust members.

Arriving at Middleton in December 1986, restoration soon began with it returning to steam in March 1990. Following, the expiry of its boiler ticket Mirvale was put on display in the Engine House with access to the cab.
