1369 (MSC 67) Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T built 1921

MSC 67 at Park Halt

1369 is one of Hudswell Clarke's "long tank" design of locomotives. This locomotive was purchased by the Manchester Ship Canal (MSC) company from new and was one of their 70 strong fleet of steam locomotives. At that stage the Manchester Ship Canal complex was one of the largest privately owned railway systems in the country.

In 2002, after an extensive three year overhaul, the loco ran at Middleton for the first time painted in a lined grey livery, which was an unusual livery for the locomotive to carry.

Sadly, after working for only a few months following its major overhaul, the locomotive failed with a cracked cylinder casing and it was thought that a very expensive repair would be required. Indeed, after considering metal stitching, welding and sleeving of the cylinder, all of which were deemed to be impracticable or impossible without specialist equipment, it looked as though the cylinder block would have to be sent away for specialist attention. However, consultation with staff at other preserved railways put us in touch with Belzona , a Harrogate based company which specialises in advanced polymer repair systems. Thanks to Belzona 1111 "Super Metal", which was used together with some steel reinforcement, the locomotive is now back in traffic.
