Now that things are starting to return to something like normality after the corona virus pandemic and the associated lockdowns, we are beginning to plan a programme of special events for 2021. Details of each of these events are given below, and we expect to be adding others very soon, so please watch out for these.

If you are interested in some of the previous events that we have run, then details of selected ones are available, and a separate page describes these.

Walking Tour

Sunday 15th August 2021

Explore the Route of the Railway

A guided walk from Leeds Bridge to our Moor Road station, exploring the original route of the railway as it carried coals almost into the centre of the city.

The walk will also take in the famous half square mile of Hunslet, through which the route of the railway ran, and where locomotives were manufactured for the world.

You can then follow the walk with a ride on the railway.

The walk will start from the downstream side of Leeds Bridge, near the Leeds crest, at 10.00, and it will take about 2 hours. More details of it are available at the Leeds City Walking Tours site (which will open in a separate browser window or tab).

The charge for the walk is £10.00p per person, and bookings for it must be made through Eventbrite (which will open in a separate browser window or tab).

The charge for the walk does not include the train fare, but there is a special fare for walkers of £5.00 per person, which will be payable at the railway.

Model Railways On Display

From Saturday 14th August to Sunday 26th September 2021

"Pop-Up" Model Railway Displays

Displays of one or two model railway layouts each weekend.

See the models alongside the real thing.

We were not able to run our normal model railway exhibition earlier this year, but in place of this we will have "pop-up" displays of one or two layouts, on weekends except the Bank Holiday from 14th August to the end of September.

Normal fares and train times will apply.

A separate page gives more details of the dates and the layouts.

September Gala

Saturday 4th September and Sunday 5th September 2021

No. 6

First and Last Chance Weekend

A first chance to see the newly-overhauled "No. 6".

A last chance to see NER 1310 before it retires from service.

This gala event will feature trains operating over the whole line, including the little-used Balm Road branch.

On each day a special intensive service will operate, and special fares will apply. A separate page gives more details of this event.

Heritage Open Days

Saturday 11th, Sunday 12th, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th September 2021

Come and find out more about our industrial heritage

As our contribution to the nation-wide "Heritage Open Days" event, we will be offering illustrated (in-person) talks about this historic site, on the railway where the world’s very first successful, load-hauling steam locomotive ran in the year of 1812.

The talks, which last some 30 mins, will run hourly from 10.00 to 3.00 p.m. on each day, and there will be no need to book for them. They will take visitors through our history from the working of the coal outcrops in Middleton Woods in mediaeval times, via the country’s first wooden (horse-drawn) railway in the eighteenth century and the revolutionary steam loco “Salamanca” - arguably, Leeds’ premier contribution to the Industrial Revolution - to the present situation as the country‘s first standard-gauge preserved railway. After that, you will be welcome to buy a ticket and ride on our trains!

The Saturday trains will be operated by heritage diesel locomotives, and the Sunday trains by steam locomotives.

There will be no charge for the tours that will form the main part of this event.

Santa Specials

Meet Santa Claus on our trains!

A separate page gives more details of these trains, and of how to book for them, including the facility to book online.

Mark New Year's Day

The ideal way to celebrate New Year 2022 (and perhaps even to recuperate from New Year’s Eve).

Fares: Adult £7.00; Children £3.00; Family £18.00 (2 adults and up to 3 children). (Note: single tickets are not available for this event.)
