MIDDLETON RAILWAY LEEDS-  SCHOOL VISITS

2010

Established in 1758, the oldest working Railway in the world.

The Middleton Railway's Education Visits Team have been working hard to make life easier for today’s teachers in Leeds and all Yorkshire areas.

Whether you teach Key Stage 1, 2, or 3 we have prepared a great deal for you, covering curriculum areas of History, Science, Literacy and Maths.

Designed by professional education consultants, we have a range of worksheets especially created for use at the Middleton Railway, either in the Engine House or on the train itself.

Our aim is to provide fun learning in a safe and enjoyable environment through experience, example and experiment.

We have reserved the following days for you to chose from.

Our site has ample, safe parking for coaches which may remain on site, or not, as the school chooses.   Therefore children are safe from the nearby road and traffic.

A bus waits in the car park to collect children on a school visit.

The Education team at Middleton Railway consists mainly of retired teachers who can deliver our “New Education Programme” which includes worksheets covering curriculum areas of History, Science, Literacy and Maths in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.   Teachers’ notes relating to each of the sheets are also made available.

The Railway has a fully furnished and equipped Children’s Classroom with display boards, flip chart and also necessary writing materials for completion of worksheets.   This room is sited on the first floor overlooking the Display Hall.

The building is DDA compliant and is monitored by CCTV and has an automatic fire detection system and alarm, our risk assessment is available upon request from ourselves or from Education Leeds, who also hold a copy.

During “School Visits” the general public are NOT admitted to the site, but, please be aware none of our staff are CRB checked for this organisation.

The Railway has a Child Protection Policy, which clearly states no volunteer may be in a one-to-one situation with a minor.

On the ground floor alongside our shop and café is a Display/interactive area with also an opportunity to sit and rest your feet and watch our Railway history video.

Middleton Railway Display Hall houses various industrial steam and diesel locomotives from different eras and countries.    Colourful Banners giving details of the history of the Railway, formation of coal and rail safety are arranged around the Display Hall for perusal.   Working members of the Railway will also be available to give information on local history of the Railway and also explanations of how a steam locomotive works.

The Middleton Railway site is a Registered Museum.

Please be aware that the Railway has no paid staff, everything is done by volunteers, so sometimes, things just take a little longer.

We can discuss, without any obligation, your schools educational visit requirements. If you would like to visit the Railway and see for yourself before you bring your pupils, we can arrange that too, with our compliments.
