68153 Ex-LNER Sentinel 4wVBGT built 1933

68153 at Grosmont, NYMR

This locomotive was built by Sentinel Ltd, Shrewsbury, in 1933 to the order of the London & North Eastern Railway. It worked at the Geneva Permanent Way Depot at Darlington and was classified Y1/2 by the LNER. It was originally No. 59 before becoming 8153 under the 1946 renumbering and 68153 on nationalisation in 1948. In 1954 it was transferred to Departmental stock and again renumbered, this time as No. 54. The locomotive was withdrawn on 29 June 1961 and purchased by the Middleton Railway, arriving here in September of the same year.
No. 54 is a typical Sentinel product with a water tube boiler and vertical cylinders inside the cab. The crankshaft is totally enclosed, running in an oil bath, and the drive to the four wheels is by two roller chains.
