Mirvale was built by Hudswell Clarke & Co. in 1955, for the
Mirvale Chemical Company at Mirfield, as a "one-off" design using
component drawings prepared for a variety of earlier Hudswell locomotives.
It worked regularly at Mirfield until late 1964.
In 1968, the locomotive became one of the most modern industrial steam
locomotives in preservation when it was purchased privately and taken to
the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which was then in its infancy. Mirvale arrived at Middleton Railway in late 1986 and entered service
there in 1990. It was in regular use until late 1998, when it was withdrawn for boiler repairs
a few months ahead of its 10 yearly boiler examination and overhaul becoming due.
